Does Acupuncture Really Work?
Yes. Acupuncture is commonly used in East Asia where it is integrated into everyday medical practice and where its benefits have been recognized for thousands of years. Acupuncture has only recently become a subject of scientific study in the United States, but nonetheless, a multitude of studies have shown acupuncture to benefit a number of conditions, particularly pain disorders. Studies have also elucidated some of the molecular mechanisms by which acupuncture works. If you are interested in reading some of these studies, the Intuitive Acupuncture blog has articles highlighting recent acupuncture research and providing links to the abstracts.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Most people barely feel a thing when acupuncture needles are inserted. Acupuncture needles are very thin (about the width of two hairs). There are some sensations that are associated with the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. These may include slight cramping, heaviness, tingling, or an electric sensation traveling along a meridian. Discomforts are mild and temporary.
I’m a little iffy about needles but all for alternative medicine. Do you offer needle-less treatments?
Yes. Moxa, gua sha, and cupping are all performed without the use of needles. We also offer custom herbal formulas. We will happily work with any patient to develop a treatment that is needleless.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
One treatment per week is commonly recommended for most long-standing conditions. Two treatments per week are usually recommended for recent injuries or illnesses. As a general rule, acupuncture isn’t a one-treatment cure-all. As with any other medical treatment, it takes a series of treatments for maximal effect. It is usually recommended that a patient commits to at least six to eight treatments for optimal benefits. Every individual is different, however, so this is determined on a case-by-case basis.
What Are the Side Effects of Acupuncture?
In short, nothing serious is likely. Some people develop a small area of redness or a little bruise where a needle was inserted. Bruises can be slightly sore. Any bruising or redness goes away within a few days. Because the needles are only used once and they are completely clean, it is impossible to contract any blood-borne infection like HIV or hepatitis from sterile acupuncture needles.
What Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat?
Acupuncture treats a wide variety of conditions including women’s health, regulating menstruation and PMS symptoms, treating endometriosis, and easing the symptoms of menopause, chronic pain conditions, anxiety, stress, fibromyalgia, fatigue, back pain, musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, seasonal allergies and digestive disorders, migraines and other headaches, infertility, cycle irregularity, impotence, allergies, asthma, addictions/smoking cessation, and gastrointestinal issues. These are only some of the conditions we treat in our clinic. Feel free to call and inquire about your specific condition.
What Can I Do To Prepare for Treatment?
Have a meal 1-2 hours prior to being seen. If you want to work out on the day of your treatment, it is advised that you exercise before coming rather than after your session. Please wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing to your treatment.
At Intuitive Acupuncture we empower our patients to heal themselves by providing effective and compassionate care that emphasizes patient education and holistic wellness.
